Brass Statues

Brass statues from Nepal are well known for its high quality and excellent craftsmanship. The artisans, especially from the Kathmandu valley, have reached a very high standard of quality. Their brass statues are shipped all over the world en they find their way to monasteries, temples and private ownership. The style of work differs from each maker. The real entrepreneur will know who the maker of a specific statue is. This art of craftsmanship is transferred from father to son for a number of decades, if not centuries. What is so special about the Nepal brass statues? The fact that not two statues are the same, as the method of production is of the lost wax method. Every time a statue is made, the unique form is lost while pouring the brass. The wax melts and the cast will be broken to unveil product. This method of production is very labour intensive. Each artisan has its own style and specific ways making the mould and production.
When a statue is unveiled from its form, it’s still very rough and unpolished. It will be worked with small hammer and fine chisels to give it its final form and details. With a file the rough edges are smoothened and by polishing the statue will get its finishing touch. Some statues are painted with real gold and beautiful natural colours. These statues are often used in temples and monasteries. In order to give a statue an “antique look” the brass is threatened with gas or submerged in a fluid to give it a dark smoked feature.

The difference in quality is mostly recognized in the used materials of brass and added materials, like silver. The value is measured by the quality of brass, its weight and the level of details. Furthermore, if gold is added for the painting, the gold prize needs tot be added. For very fine and detailed work the muscles and anatomy of the body, legs and arms are recognized. Only the practiced eye will notice these details. When exporting, all statues are to be controlled by the department of archaeology, who gives a seal for export. Only marked statues are allowed to leave the country.
The Nepalese custom office is strictly controlling every export and luggage of passengers leaving the country. With reason, as there have been numerous of valuables been robbed from this country.

Brass statues from the very best quality are mainly made in Patan. Here are the real masters at work. Of course in other places there are good artisans too, but the quality and skills found in Patan are real suburb. As we have good connections with the makers we can offer you the best quality.
