Khukuris

The history of Nepal is marked by old traditions. One of the traditions is the use of the Khukuri. This knife is not only a well known weapon of the Nepalese and British Gorkha army but it is used in many households as well. It is used as a working knife to chop firewood and slaughter animals for food. Still it remains a weapon, sometimes used for protection against wild dogs as sometimes tigers or leopards attack villagers. In this way the Khukuri was used in the old days, so it is used in modern times.

The army Khukuri is traditionally made in Dharan in eastern Nepal, where the Gorkha army have there bases. The Khukuri makers are the regular suppliers for the army but do sell their knives to private parties as well. Furthermore, in many other places the Khukuris are manufactured. These knives are not so exclusive, but serve their purpose as for daily use.

A good quality Khukuri is made form the rear springs of a TATA truck. TATA stands for quality in India and Nepal, like Mercedes is the quality brand for Europe. Truck springs are made of excellent steel. For the knives only the best parts are used. The spring blade is cut to size and worked to its bent shape and sharpness. Only the experienced blacksmith is able to produce a perfect knife. The finishing part of the knife is the handle. This is made of the horn of the water buffalo. The best parts of the horn are used to make the handle. It’s the finishing touch and makes this craftsmanship complete together with the brass ends and fittings on the knife and scabbard.

The two small knives fit on the side of the scabbard are used to maintain the sharpness of the knife. The scabbard is covered with fine buffalo leather for finishing and can be attached to a belt.
